Memory Garden

How do we keep the memory of a loved one alive?
Jade Goody’s sons are to light an eternal flame in her memory to mark her first anniversary. They will place the lantern on her memorial stone in a remembrance garden. Jackiey Burden has said her memorial service on March 21st will be ‘a day to remember Jade in a nice way- her laughter and her love.’
But do you find it difficult to mark people’s passing every year? How do you remember those you’ve lost? And are grave sites good to reflect in?
The memory of a loved one is a symbol, to which you attach many other memories.
For instance, over the years: you have moments you remember, things you did together, experiences of various kinds. All those things become attached to the symbol “Mr X or Mrs A”. So when they die, the role that this person has in your life and the role you have in their life has no way to express itself. Thus there is grief: not for the person who is dead, but for a part of yourself which has no way to express itself, because the target of that expression has died.
Thus there is a void in you, which you can either allow to remain, or you can look for another person(s) with which you can express affection toward.
You see we human beings are very envious peoples. We restrict who we give affection to based upon our idea of what is gratifying to us or not. We say: “I find this person attractive”, then later “now not so attractive”. This restriction we place upon ourselves means that we have only one person with which to express ourselves with, for that particular role. We give people titles such as: husband, son, father, mother, boss, collegue; thus, we are only able to interact with those people within the mental frame in which we place them into. We become committed to that person (for the role our brain projects upon them), much in the way that a person becomes committed to a political party, or to ones country.
Our brains are divisive, because of this, we suffer grief when a person dies.
So when death occurs, we feel that our idea of “love” has just died, but that idea in the first place was the result of envy, the desire to have a person as our own for the particular role we require them for.
