Discover What Orchid Types Exist In The World

Orchids are the largest flower family in the world but have the smallest number of orchid types. There are thousands upon thousands of orchid species that have been hybridized and variegated; however, of all the thousands of different species, there are basically only two core types of orchid. They are the terrestrial orchids that grow on the ground and the Epiphytes orchids that are usually found attached to trees, rocks or on poles.

Terrestrial types of orchids, just like any other plants, have roots that grow underneath the surface of the soil but they can also grow extremely well in the loose humus of rotted wood or decayed leaves. Its nourishment is derived from nutrients found in the surrounding soil. Some species of terrestrial orchids are also considered as “semi-terrestrial” because they both have underground and aerial roots.  Cymbidium orchids which originate from Australia, South East Asia and Japan are a representative for terrestrial orchids that can live both on the ground and settled on trees and rocks. These types of orchids were among the very first types of orchids that have been cultivated and have roughly 40 different species and a huge number of hybrids. Cymbidium orchids are also popular for beginners because they are easy to grow and with proper care, they will offer magnificent, stunning blooms every year.

The second of the two types of orchids, the aerial ones, are epiphytes. The term epiphyte doesn’t necessarily refer only to orchids. This term pertains to any plant with a root system that is above the ground. Epiphytic orchids have an aerial root system, whereby, they attach themselves to trees, rocks or poles. Dendrobiums are the most well- known epiphytic orchids. Despite being somewhat easy to grow and manage, they do tend to demand more attention and care than Cymbidiums. Also this type of orchid does not tend to flower as easily and as often, however with more than 1000 species to choose from it is possible to find one that will suit your orchid growing experience and conditions. Dendrobiums are widely found in many parts of the world, Polynesia, Northern India, Australia and South East Asia. They are indigenous tropical plants that are accustomed to the tropical climate of their natural habitat, and so typically prefer a warm, humid environment in order to reach their optimum growth. Phalaenopsis is another epiphytic type of orchid, which is popular due to ease of growth and enduring flowers. These types of orchids are commonly seen at wedding ceremonies as they come in an amazing spectrum of colors from pinks, yellow and striped varieties.

Epiphytic orchids are fascinating because they grow on structures like trees and poles but don’t actually obtain their food and minerals from these hosts. These types of orchids derive their nutrients from organic debris that is deposited between the roots and branches of the host trees. Epiphytic types of orchids have specialized aerial roots which can successfully nourish the plant whether the conditions are wet or dry. The tough, stringy core of the aerial orchids’ main root system is enveloped in a sponge like covering that easily absorbs water. Every time it rains, the covering soaks up water, turning light green when it cannot absorb any more water. The orchids’ roots preserve the moisture and then slowly pass it on to the plant tissues as needed. There are also some species of epiphytic orchids that successfully wrap themselves to rocks. By hanging from trees or rocks, these epiphytes, in this greatly favored environment that is open and airy, grow well in diffused light.
