Lingonberry Plants
Suggestions for plantings??
I live in Denver, CO which if you’re not from here is hot and fairly dry in the summer (Zone 5). I just moved in to a new home last fall. I have a large juniper tree in the front yard, nicely shaped and about 30 feet tall. My problem is that under the tree (there is a circle about 15 ft across and 4 ft. of height) where nothing but weeds will grow. It gets some afternoon sun because of the way the tree is situated on an embankment. It does not get great water but I intend to remedy that prior to planting.
My question is: What, if any, suggestions do you have for a ground cover that is tough enough to live under a juniper tree. I would prefer something that spreads quickly and flowers but I am mostly concerned with just getting something to grow there. Also please advise whether I would need to lime the presumably acidic soil (I haven’t tested but…50+ years of fallen needles…) or whether the plant can tolerated acidity. Perhaps Lingonberry?? Thanks so much.
We have nothing but Juniper trees on our property (high desert)
I would suggest Johnny jump-ups they see to thrive anywhere and everywhere
You might try putting a planter around the tree just a few inches high like a cherry log and adding a few inches of soil
